1. What should I do if I witness someone dumping trash/garbage or any other trype of debris illegally?

Don't approach the person. Call 911. Give a description of the person and of the vehicle, as well as the tag number of the vehicle. Always remember that the debris could be of a hazardous nature.

2. Is it ok to throw food products out along the highways because they are biodegradable?

No. It attracts domestic and wild animals which could cause many accidents that result in property damage, injuries, and fatalities.

3. If I send my garbage/trash off by another person and they dump or dispose of it illegally can I be held liable for their actions?

Yes. You are legally responsible by law to make sure your garbage/trash is properly disposed of.

4. What do I need to do if I find garbage/trash or any other debris dumped on my property?

Do not disturb the debris. Contact the Litter Officer and allow him to document the dump site and search through the debris to find possible evidence so the proper person(s) can be prosecuted.

5. If someone dumps debris on my property who is responsible for cleaning and removal of the debris?

If the person that committed the offense is found, charged, and convicted the Court may order that person(s) responsible to clean up the debris or pay to have the property cleaned up. Hampton County is not responsible for the removal or cleaning of garbage/trash or any other debris from private property.
